2. Das Wichtigste in Kürze

3. Welche Daten wir verarbeiten

3.1 Konto

3.8 Push-Mitteilungen

3.9 Server-Protokolle

Privacy policy

As of October 2026 · for the “wehrareyou” app (Android), the web view of shared trips and this website. This is a translation; the German version is legally binding.

2. In short

3. What data we process

3.1 Account

For an account we store your email address and password (only as an irreversible Argon2 hash), optionally a name shown to co-travellers, and the sign-in sessions of your devices. The purpose is signing in and assigning your content. The legal basis is the performance of the user agreement (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). The data is kept until you delete your account.

Emails for confirmation and passwords: After you sign up, we send you a link to confirm your email address; only then can you sign in. If you request a new password, we send you a link to set it. We do not send any other emails (e.g. advertising). We only store a hash of the link, its validity (48 hours or 1 hour) and the time of confirmation. The emails are sent via IONOS’s mail server (see 4.1). The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.

Sign-in with Google (optional): If you choose “Continue with Google”, Android opens Google’s account picker. Google then sends us a signed sign-in token containing your email address, whether Google has verified it, and an identifier of your Google account; we do not receive your Google password, contacts or any other data. We verify the signature with Google’s public keys and store the identifier to recognise you the next time you sign in. If an account with the same email address already exists, it is linked. The provider is Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland (parent company Google LLC, USA), which processes data during sign-in under its own responsibility; for transfers to the USA, Google is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR. You can use wehrareyou just as well with an email address and password.

3.2 Photos and videos

wehrareyou accesses your phone’s media library only with your permission. It uploads the items you select and – if you turn on automatic import for a trip – new items from that trip’s period. We store the original with its metadata (e.g. capture time, GPS location, file name, size, dimensions) and previews generated from it. Stops, routes and statistics are derived from time and place. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR. The files are kept until you delete them, the trip or your account. The photos on your phone remain unchanged.

Photos may show other people. Please only upload and share such photos if you are entitled to do so.

3.3 Trips, texts and settings

We store your trips, stops, descriptions, route corrections, settings and – if you create them – protected places for privacy mode (e.g. your home). Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR; kept until deleted.

3.4 Location: route recording and Google Timeline (optional)

If you turn on route recording for a trip, the app records your location with your location permission about once a minute while you are moving during the trip period and uploads the points in batches. A notification shows that recording is active. If you import a Google Maps Timeline, the app reads the file on your phone and only transfers location points from the trip period. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time by turning off recording or revoking the location permission; you can delete stored points in the app under “Location history”.

3.5 Co-travellers

If you invite others to a trip, all members see its content and add their own photos to the same trip. It is shown who uploaded a photo (name or email address). Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.

3.6 Shared links and visitors

If you share a trip via a link, anyone with the link can view the shared content in a browser – depending on your settings with downloads of originals, reactions and comments, and in privacy mode without the exact location of your home and accommodations. You can change or delete links at any time.

Visitors who react or comment enter a name; the browser stores a random visitor ID so their own reactions are recognised. Name, reaction and comment are stored and shown to the trip’s owner, optionally as a push notification. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) or (f) GDPR (legitimate interest in the comment function). Kept until the comment, photo, link or account is deleted.

3.7 Trip videos

Trip videos are created on our server from your content and kept until you delete them in the app (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).

3.8 Push notifications

For notifications (e.g. “❤️ Lisa likes your photo”, “New photos in your trip”, “Video ready”) we use Firebase Cloud Messaging by Google (Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland; parent company Google LLC, USA). We store a device identifier (push token) and transmit it with the notification text to Google. The legal basis is your consent given through the notification permission (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can revoke in your phone’s settings. For transfers to the USA, Google is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

3.9 Server logs

When the app, web view or website is used, our server processes technically necessary data: IP address, time, requested address, response code and duration. The purpose is secure and stable operation, preventing abuse (e.g. limiting sign-in attempts) and troubleshooting. The legal basis is our legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). The logs are continuously overwritten and not combined with other data.

4. Services used by wehrareyou

4.1 Hosting

Our server is operated by IONOS SE, Elgendorfer Str. 57, 56410 Montabaur, Germany. We also send the confirmation and password emails via IONOS’s mail server. IONOS processes data on our behalf under a data processing agreement (Art. 28 GDPR).

4.2 Maps

Your device loads the maps in the app and web view directly from the following providers. They receive your IP address and the map area shown, but not your account or photos. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in displaying maps).

4.3 Route calculation

To calculate road, rail, ferry and walking routes between your stops, our server sends coordinates of start, destination and waypoints (without names, email addresses or photos) to the following services and stores the results. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.

4.4 Google Play

You get the app via Google Play or – until it appears there – as a file (APK) on this website; downloading only creates the usual server logs (see 3.9). On Google Play, Google processes data under its own responsibility; see Google’s privacy policy. wehrareyou itself contains no advertising, analytics or crash-reporting libraries.

5. Storage on your device

The app stores your sign-in, settings and the upload queue on your phone. The web view and this website only store the chosen language, display settings (e.g. playback speed) and – for reactions or comments – visitor ID and name in the browser. This is strictly necessary for the functions you request (Section 25(2) TDDDG). We do not use cookies.

6. When we delete data

If you delete a photo, trip or link, we remove the related data and files from the server immediately. If you delete your account, all your trips with photos, videos, links, comments, location history and settings are deleted immediately. Photos you uploaded as a co-traveller to another account’s trip belong to that trip and remain there without your name; delete them yourself beforehand if you do not want that.

7. Your rights

You have the right of access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 21). You can withdraw consent at any time with effect for the future (Art. 7(3)). Write to us at the email address above. You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the member state of your residence, place of work or the alleged infringement.
